our green array

2022-ongoing

The human eye perceives more shades of green than any other colour. This attunement to nature indicates the rich evolutionary relationship we have with the objective world, and with plants in particular. Digital photography reduces this incredibly nuanced chromatic experience to a series of numerical values. In the case of Our Green Array, each image has its average colour (green) calculated as a hexadecimal value and is then processed as a monochromatic version of the original image using this calculated average. The images, while remaining explicit in detail, become abstractions of their subjects as they are reduced to a single unique hue. When these abstractions are exhibited and viewed together the series reads as a palette.

The photographs used in this series are taken in response to a shade of green as it is encountered. In effect, the images become part of the series before the photographs are taken and prior to any technological mediation. Many of the photographic subjects used here are of swathes or banks of foliage, garden beds and masses of botanical commingling. While subjectively related, the images are unique in both their particular green and location.
